Doom didn't kill the Amiga...Wolfenstein 3D did
Wolfenstein 3D released by id Software in 1992 brought in a change to video games. 2D games were no longer cool and texture mapped 3d rendered games were taking over. However, the ray casting technology presented a challenge if you owned an Amiga computer - it simply wasn't capable of running Wolfenstein 3d and in many ways Wolfenstein 3d can be seen as a major milestone that determined the fate of the Commodore Amiga that went bankrupt in 1994. In this episode we take a closer look at the Amiga and its many FPS clones that attempted to emulate the technology and success of Wolfenstein 3D, but ultimately led to the demise of Commodore.

    I think that history will show that Amiga died for a lot of reasons, but most of them had to do with the approach used to accomplish things that Commodore chose. the PC world was mostly fairly simple and straight forward hardware with (for the time) a lot of processing power. Amiga was a collection of relatively custom graphics chips with a lot less processing power. It seems like a battle of two different ways to accomplish a similar goal, but that really wasn't true. The Amiga was essentially capped out and limited by what it's graphics chips could do. They were amazing at certain things, and terrible at other things. They were in fact an evolution dead end, the very best of what could be tracked all the way back to the Commodore PET. They had evolved, evolved, and continued down a path that gave a lot of good results earlier than the others but in the end limited their abilities. You can look at the history and see what really won: expandability and development within a standard. The PC (and the Apple II at the time) very specifically featured expansion slots. To this day, the PC is made up of parts often added via expansion slots. This is a winner because it allows for both evolution and specialization. If you wanted a computer to do a lot of storage, you could add in extra cards to be interfaces. If you wanted network, or if you wanted graphics, you could do it. Companies like 3DFX brought a pretty decent version of well rendered 2.5D to the PC world for a price. It was awesome (I htink I still have my card here somewhere). Amiga was pretty much dead ended at that point. It represented the end of the line for a style of system and graphics that quickly fell out of favor. It was easily dismissed as being an out of date home arcade machine, and to be fair it still had a hard time to beat things like the playstation or even the original nintendo machine in this regard. So it was too computer to be a gaming console, and too gaming to be a good PC. Commodore literally drove into a wedge that was always going to get smaller. By the time they realized, the walls had already closed in and the fun was over. Basically, it is the story of open development vs closed development. You know how that turns out.

    STFU. All the "3-D" garbage that started coming out is what in fact killed gaming, because it was trash compared with hand-drawn, graphically awesome, so-called 2-D games, period. Both doom and wolfeinstein were and still are garbage games for the blind.

    A lot of Amigans happily blame Carmack for not trying hard enough, while pointing at the SNES which got both Wolfenstein 3-D and Doom, but here's the thing: The SNES had a *gigantic* install base, and publishers who were willing to fork over the money for the licenses.

    Hi Modern Vintage Gamer, I recently watched your video, and I wanted to share some thoughts. With games like 'Dread' and 'Grind' demonstrating that even an Amiga 500 can run a decent Wolfenstein or Doom clone, it seems the Amiga's potential might have been underestimated. These examples show that the issue wasn't the hardware itself but rather that developers at the time didn't have the know-how to program these types of games. I believe this insight might provide a great opportunity for a follow-up video that highlights the Amiga's capabilities in a more positive light. As a fellow Amiga enthusiast, I think this would resonate well with the community

    • @SomeOrangeCat
      @SomeOrangeCat 2 часа назад

      Dread and Grind came over three decades after the fact, utilizing concepts and techniques that were not available at the time. Yes, it took someone *three* decades to sort out how to go about it. In fact Dread was abandoned and Grind still hasn't seen a full release yet. In the context of the video, he said nothing inaccurate. In 1993, this kind of game was indeed impossible on the Amiga. Especially within the "We need this game developed and on store shelves in a matter of months!" kinds of dev cycles that were expected by publishers back then.

    What's crazy is devs basically had to start from scratch with engines and editors for each game on the n64 and ps1, and even then we still got quality games. Today, devs have unreal engine and unity and somehow we end up with lower quality games being released

    Commodore & Amiga died due to the Accountants taking over they dismissed alot of the development staff which ment the next gen custom Chips was delayed to the point AGA was rushed out as a half house stop gap. I read the intended replacement chip set was twice as powerful as AGA or four times of original chipset more than capable of keeping up with a pc with 3d graphics and 386or 486. Also Commodore were late paying bills so suppliers increased minimum order sizes and asked for part payment up front. They were still trying to sale the C64 as a computer & console when Amiga had supplanted it in the market, had a pc arm that were losing money for many years but amiga cash kept afloat so Commodore could say they did business machines instead of pushing amigas to video and graphics that mac took over when amiga disappeared.

    486 dx2 66 just made the Amiga feel slow. TrueType fonts in Windows 3.1 looked massively better. Way more than just Wolfenstein that killed the Amiga. Even games that were released on Amiga were suddenly better on PCs and unlike Amigas PCs were getting faster and cheaper all the time. Original Civilization was what replaced my Amiga 2000 with a PC. VGA and XGA were better displays, and hard drives were suddenly "normal".

    I remember the amiga owners bragging about all the stuff they could do with their systems which, to be fair, was pretty advanced for the time including graphically. The PC's in general where intended as business machines originally and weren't made for advanced graphics. There was still PC games being made but they where limited to whatever the main processor could dish out. Wolfenstein might of done it or at least legitimized PC as a gaming platform. Once video cards started being made for PC, you stopped hearing about AMIGA entirely. I remember getting into some debates with amiga fans back in the day but now you almost never hear about it nowadays. Now, it's console vs PC.
